Sam wrote his first drum instruction book at the age of 15 and has continued to write, illustrate and publish his own drum instruction books ever since, amassing a collection of over 4000 books!  We are attempting to archive, catalogue and download some of his most popular books.  Up until his death at 93 years old, he still set time aside in his schedule every day to write and publish new books.

Many drummers lack the ability to read the written drum part on sheet music.  Sam strongly believes that drummers must learn to read music - and that once you learn the values of the notes and how much sound has to be in a measure, then you can play anything with any group in any situation.

Sam’s instructional drum books are not just books of scores and notation, he actually is walking you through the lesson.  In them he explains HOW to count the beat and WHY you count.  They’re like a real lesson with Sam, without having to travel to New York City.

The drum instruction books listed below are available for download or by mail - and we’re working on making more of Sam’s books available for download - so keep checking back for new books.

If you’re a beginner, Sam suggests you begin with classic works like “Bass Bops,” “The Roll Study Guide” and “The Drum Reader Series,” which present fundamental reading skills in a clear, simple-to-follow system of learning.

BASS BOPS

In print continuously since its creation in 1948, Bass Bops is the drum literature book that dissected the cool sound of bebop for the first time.  The use of the bass drum, with modern kicks as it is played today, almost requires a study of its own.  This book teaches you how to play with both feet while playing with your two hands.  (It is assumed that the drummer has a fundamental knowledge of drumming and reading music.)

The Drum Reader Series are in the following signatures:

2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, 7/4 and 3/8, 5/8, 6/8, 7/8, 9/8, 12/8 time.

THE FLAM

Book 1 is a complete basic breakdown of the fundamentals of reading music, including detailed explanations of the theory of reading. DRUM READER SERIES ELEMENTARY BOOK 2 -

THE DRAG STUDY

The traditional way to play drags was to make the first two little strokes played with one hand and the major stroke played by the other hand - the two little strokes along side the quarter note have no value. These two strokes embellish the quarter note.  This stroke is called a three stroke roll by some rudimentalists.  However, when we play musically, these two little strokes should sound like a buzz roll before the quarter note strikes the drum -  a more musical way to play the drag.

DRUM READER SERIES ELEMENTARY BOOK 3 -

THE RUFF STUDY

The four stroke ruff is one of the strokes listed in the group called rudiments.  The dictionary does not state that the ruff or other strokes are the beginning of drumming.  Where does the four stroke fit into playing drums in a band?

THE RUFF AND TAP

A ruff is a group of four strokes.  The first three strokes have no value in the measure.  The quarter note or eighth note that follows the three little strokes is a full note from the start.  You play the three small notes, RLR, and when you strike the quarter note you count one. Then you say and.
